Litchifield

[EN] I arrive in Darwin at around 2pm: it is stinking hot and rather humid, despite the fact that it is winter (i.e. the dry season)... quite a thermal shock after the cold winter nights in the desert! Just the time to find a cheap car to rent and I'm already hitting the road to the Litchfield National Park. It's not too far from the city, so I'm there well before sunset. I stay in a campsite for the night, and the day after I start my exploration of the park. One day is enough to see the most interesting places around: stunning falls and natural pools (they have been some scenes of "Crocodile Dundee" here!), canyons and huge termite mounds... yes, those in the photos are not big rocks, but "cathedral" mounds!!!

Ciao from Eva

[EN] Hi everybody, I'm writing from an internet point in Townsville, on the East Coast, and I'm forwarding a post from Eva, who is writing from Melbourne. Ciao Eva!

Ciao Eva!

4am. That's how this trip started - and it wasn't even for MY flight to Uluru. Little did I know that P had organised for us to welcome the sunrise numerous times during the trip... that's what happens when you don't help organise the itinerary. The fiery glow of Uluru at sunset was better than the hot tea and cookies provided at sunrise. Taste this plant. Like honey. Taste this berry. Like sultanas. Taste this berry. It tastes like a plant. Can we please have a steak? No opportunity to spear the other in the side as accepted punishment for any injustices. Didn't kiss Mick Jagger’s massive lips either. We either naturally understand Pitjantjatjara or have active imagination of Anangu lore. At least 400m vertically down onto rocks - no footholds. P, are you sure we should keep climbing higher? Not all pins need to be in to keep the tent grounded. Gee, my backpack seems light – thanks for carrying the water. I know you want a mobile-free trip but I told them to call your mobile. You wake up first. Thanks to Nadia, Chris, Estelle and Federico for their hospitality. Miss you heaps P, hopefully one day we’ll travel another part of the world together. E

Alice Springs

[EN] Finally we arrived in Alice Springs! The road in the desert seemed endless, but we finally made it! We only had one day to explore around Alice, which is not much considered how many interesting spots there are in the MacDonnells ranges, but we really squeezed the best out of it. Eva and myself decided to go for the western side of the mountain range, as suggested by Federico, a friend of Nadia whom we met for dinner after our arrival. The day after we rented a car and in the morning we explored the Standley Chasm, a very deep gully in the western range trough which we could barely see the sunlight, and then climbed to the peak that dominates the area. It was a memorable scramble: Eva and myself struggled a bit to get on the top, but we had great fun. Some transitions were a bit scary, but Eva is more reckless (and much fitter) than I am, so it was all good and we were rewarded with a spectacular view from the top. In the afternoon we went to the beautiful Ormiston Gorge, a spectacular canyon situated at the entry of a plain enclosed between the mountains. That was a loong walk, but again... absolutely spectacular. The day after Eva and myself split our ways, she's going back to Melbourne, while I'm flying to Darwin to continue my trip. It was very sad having to say farewell after the time we shared on the road, but on the other hand I'm really glad that we could share this part of my trip: farewell Eva, thanks for the good time we had together... and see you around the Globe!
[IT] Finalmente siamo arrivati in Alice Springs!

King's Canyon

[EN] Early this morning we left Uluru heading to King's Canyon, one of the gems of the Red Centre. Here we did the "Rim Walk" around the border of the canyon: an unforgettable excursion, in which we admired breath-taking panoramas and learned about the local flora from our guide Chris (who really knows a lot about this, plus a wealth of jokes!). Don't be mistaken by the shortness of this post: King's Canyon is so spectacular that this was the highlight of our experience in the Red Centre! After the excursion, we jumped back on the bus for a 5 hours drive in the middle of the desert, heading to the last location of our desert trip: Alice Springs!

Kata Tjuta

[EN] This morning we explored further the fascinating world of the Anangu and their traditions with the help of our aboriginal guide Wally. Not only he explained us the Lore about the survival in the desert (construction and use of weapons, finding food, etc.), but he also talked about the values of the Aboriginals. This was particularly touching, considering the terrible conditions in which so many of his people are leaving in the australian cities. Under Wally's guide we had an unforgettable insight into the story of the aboriginals, which is at the same time fascinating and sad, mysterious and dramatic. Truly, a unique experience. In the afternoon Nadia had to leave us to go back to work, and Eva and myself explored the monumentous canyons of Kata Tjuta (aka the Olgas): another memorable exporation of the natural marvels of the Red Centre!

Uluru day #2!

[EN] This morning Nadia helped me in finalizing the last bookings for the trips of the next days, then we went to the airport to pick up Eva. She'll be traveling with me for the next 3 days. In the afternoon, we went for a walk around Uluru, in which Nadia explained us some of the many Stories that the Anangu (the local aboriginals) use to preserve and transmit the Lore, a general term that includes their myths, the history of their people, the location of the paths across the desert, and the right ways of surviving the harsh desert evironment. The stories are beautiful, and are often associated to sacred places around Uluru (Kalaya Tjunta, Kuniya Piti, Mala Puta...), which I could not photograph. But here are some shots of other spectacular views of the Rock: it was a great experience, and Nadia has been a fantastic guide in explaining us the meaning of the places that we admiried, which are much more than monumentous natural attractions. In the night, more "conventional" shots of the Rock at the sunset and then a huge steak at the pub. What a day!

Uluru day #1

[EN] First day in Uluru! A very exciting day, after a very short night (~2 hours sleep!) and a very sad departure from Melbourne this early morning. A big kiss & much love to the good friends that came to say ciao at the airport at 4am: Bedders, Caitlin, Jas & Eva (whom I am going to see again since she is coming to do some traveling with me in the next days). I arrived to the Red Hearth of Australia in the late morning, and I caught up with Nadia, a very good friend from the Renegades Club who is working here as a tourist guide with her boyfriend Chris who flies helicopters in the area. Nadia is helping me and Eva in organizing our trips, and she will be with us tomorrow and monday morning in our excursions to Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Thank you Nadia! In the late afternoon, I spent a couple of hours in a first "exploration" of Uluru: the impact with the Big Rock has been huge, have a look at the photos! Yes, I know, I shouldn't have climbed the rock for respect of the aboriginal traditions, but you have to understand me... I come from the Alps, it's in my blood... when I see a slope I need to climb it ;-). Anyway, it was simply FAN-TA-STIC, I can't wait for Eva and Nadia to join me in the next days for the proper trips! Uluru day #1 has been an awesome start!
[IT] Il primo giorno in Uluru!
