The world's smallest diamond ring

[EN] The research work I have been doing in the last three years in Australia at the Centre for Quantum Computer Technology recently made the big news! In very basic terms, I have been working on the fabrication of optical nanostructures in diamond, which is not only the girls' best friend but also a very promising material in futuristic applications such as quantum computing and quantum cryptography. What you can see in the attached picture (taken with a scanning electron microscope) is the "world's smallest diamond ring", an optical nano-structure that I fabricated entirely in diamond with the use of ion beam irradiation: apart from having a technological interestet, it also sparked some appeal in the broader audience!

[IT] Il lavoro di ricerca che ho fatto negli ultimi tre anni in Australia al Centre for Quantum Computer Technology ha recentemente fatto notizia! In parole povere, ho lavorato sulla fabbricazione di nano-strutture ottiche in diamante, che non è soltanto il miglior amico delle ragazze, ma anche un materiale molto promettente in applicazioni futuristiche come la computazione quantistica e la crittografia quantistica. Nella immagine a fianco (ottenuta con un microscopio elettronico) potete vedere  il "più piccolo anello di diamante al mondo", una nano-struttura ottica che ho fabbricato interamente in diamante con l'uso di fasci ionici: oltre ad avere un interesse tecnologico, ha anche risvegliato un certo appeal nel grande pubblico!

Ski in Prato Nevoso!

[EN] Ever though that you have died and woken up in a snowy heaven? mmm... probably not, aaanyway... skiing in Prato Nevoso last Saturday with my good friend Millo was something very close to it! heaps of pure white snow, beautiful sunny weather, and a pair of brand new ski's under my feet... that's my idea of "quality time"!

[IT] Avete mai pensato di essere morti ed esservi risvegliati in un paradiso nevoso? mmm... probabilmente no, cooomunque... sciare a Prato Nevoso sabato scorso con il mio buon amico Millo era qualcosa di molto vicino! montagne di ottima neve, splendida giornata, e un paio di sci nuovi di zecca sotto i piedi... questa è la mia idea di "quality time"!

The first Conch album is out now!!!

[EN] The first album of the Conch (my former australian latin-ska-reggae-funk-indie-rap band) is out now... how exciting is that?! After the recording of a pretty good demo 1 year ago or so, we finally made it and produced a selection of our songs we were really proud of. Unfortunately I left Australia when the album was still in the mixing phase, and I didn't have the chance to be with my good mates on the "CD release" gig... nonetheless I was in Skype contact with them and I really could feel their enthusiasm about what we made together! So, the album is out now: you can have a taste of it on the Conch website or on the band MySpace site... check it out, and if you dig it, let me know and I'll spare a copy for you: the Conchies are going to send me pack of CDs as soon as I let them know how many friends are interested...!

[IT] E' uscito il primo album dei Conch (la mia ex-band australiana latin-ska-reggae-funk-indie-rap band)... che figata! Dopo aver inciso un buon demo un anno fa o giu' di li', finalmente ce l'abbiamo fatta e abbiamo prodotto una selezione delle nostre canzoni di cui essere veramente fieri. Sfortunatamente, ho lasciato l'Australia quando l'album era ancora in fase di mixaggio, e non ho avuto la possibilita' di essere con i miei buoni amici al concerto del lancio del CD... comunque ero in contatto Skype con loro e sono davvero riuscito a sentire il loro entusiasmo per quello che si e' fatto insieme! Quindi, il CD e' uscito: potete avere un'idea sul sito dei Conch o sulla pagina Myspace della band... dateci un'occhiata, e se vi interessa fatemi sapere e mettero' una copia da parte per voi: i Conchies stanno per mandarmi un pacco di CD non appena gli faccio sapere quanti amici sono interessati...!

[EN] Yes we made it! The dream team formed with my good mates Millo and Ale won the very prestigious beach volley tournament that was organized last sunday in my home town in occasion of the patronal celebrations. Yes I now what you are thinking... but just because Dronero is a little town inhabited by 7,000 souls it doesn't mean that we have heaps of awesome BV players to play against! And so, there we go: tired, sandy and triumphant!

[IT] Ce l'abbiamo fatta! Il dream team formato con i miei buoni amici Millo e Ale ha vinto il prestigiosissimo torneo di beach volley che si e' organizzato domenica scorsa nel mio paese in occasione della festa patronale. Si', lo so cosa state pensando... ma solo perche' Dronero conta a malapena settemila anime non vuol dire che non abbiamo tantissimi ottimi giocatori di beach volley contro cui giocare! E quindi, eccoci qua: stanchi, insabbiati e trionfanti!

V-day 2007!

[IT] Durante il pomeriggio di sabato 8 settembre ero sulla strada del ritorno per Torino, ma sabato sera sono arrivato in piazza Castello in tempo per unirmi alle tante persone a cui sta a cuore il futuro del nostro paese, per votare una proposta di legge che vieti l'accesso al Parlamento agli "onorevoli" condannati in via definitiva. La rinascita verso cose piu' giuste e piu' belle passa anche attraverso queste dimostrazioni della societa' civile. Vedere migliaia di persone per bene mettersi pazientemente in fila per ore, per poter firmare una proposta di legge diffusa esclusivamente via rete, con lo scandaloso ostracismo (o la derisione) delle televisioni e dei giornali, e' stata un'esperienza che mi ha ispirato e fatto sperare per il futuro. I popoli non dovrebbero avere paura dei loro governanti, i governanti dovrebbero avere paura dei loro popoli: ci si ritrova in piazza per il V-day 2008!

2 weeks on the road!

[EN] These last two weeks have been really intense! I have spent one week in Zagreb discussing about some future projects and doing some preliminary experiments with the friends at the Ruđer Bošković Institute. I had a really good time there, although entering in Croatia was not easy in a first attempt, with an expired identity card... ehr, I had to stop at the IT-HR border, go back to Torino and renew my documents! Yes I know, quite embarassing, but hey one cannot always think about everything, right? The next week, with my workmates Betta and Alex, I attended the ECAART conference on the applications of nuclear accelerators, in the gorgeous city of Florence, where I had the chance to meet lots of very stimulating people from the local group of the LABEC laboratory, and from around the world. Lots of good science and... yummy food and wines!!! The highlight of these 2 weeks was the very special night I spent in the city on friday... a truly unforgettable experience!

[IT] Queste ultime due settimane sono state davvero intense! Ho passato una settimana a Zagabria a discutere di progetti futuri e a fare alcuni esperimenti preliminari con gli amici dell'Istituto Ruđer Bošković. Mi sono trovato davvero bene, anche se entrare in Croazia non e' stato molto facile a un primo tentativo, con una carta di identita' scaduta... ehm, ho dovuto fermarmi al confine italo-croato, tornare a Torino e rinnovare i documenti! Si' lo so, e' davvero imbarazzante, ma uno non puo' sempre pensare a tutto, giusto? La settimana seguente, insieme ai miei colleghi Betta e Alex, ho partecipato alla conferenza ECAART sulle applicazioni degli acceleratori nucleari, nella bellissima citta' di Firenze, dove ho avuto la possibilita' di conoscere un sacco di persone interessanti dal gruppo locale del laboratorio LABEC, e da tutto il mondo. Tanta buona scienza e... deliziose pietanze e vini!!! Il top di queste 2 settimane e' stata la bellissima serata che ho passato in Firenze venerdi'... un'esperienza indimenticabile!
